Description

A lithograph with hand colouring in pink, green, orange and brown on 8vo-size white wove paper. A title printed at upper centre: 'CONSTANCY'. A letterpress verse is printed below: 'Go where we will this hand is thine, - / Those eyes before me smiling thus; / Through good and ill, through storm and shine, / The world's a world of love for us - / Nor care I to what lands I roam, / With thee the desert wild's a home'. A central roundel below contains a scene of a couple sitting beneath a double-trunked tree, the male figure leaning towards and encircling the waist of the female figure in pink who holds a handkerchief in her left hand. The roundel is flanked by symmetrical trees and garlands of pink roses. The back paper is missing. One of three valentines in the same style and design and employing the same colours, which are mounted together on consecutive leaves of album P.14416-R. See also P.14416-R-63 and P.14416-R-65. A hand-written inscription in graphite on the verso: 'Three th[?] 6/- [6 shillings]'. The inscription indicates that all three valentines were purchased at 2 shillings each.
