Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-size white wove paper. A border of pink roses, leafy scrolls and birds of paradise extends around the edge of the paper from left to right. The border terminates in Cupid's quiver of arrows. A naked putto, presumably Cupid, sits amongst the leafy scrolls at upper left. A verse is printed in sloping script at the centre: 'Oh! would that Love had power to raise / A little Isle for us alone, / With fairy flowers, and sunny rays, / The blue sea wave it's [sic] guardian gem, / No other step should ever press, / This hidden Eden of the heart, / And we would share its loveliness, / From every other thing apart.'. The interior is blank. Similar in style to P.14416-R-74, which is mounted on the adjacent leaf. A hand-written inscription in graphite on the album leaf below: '2/6 [2 shillings sixpence]'. This pricing was probably transcribed from the handwritten MS by second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1). This card is listed with P.14416-R-74 in the Frampton MS, with each priced at 2/6 [2 shillings and sixpence].
