Description

A hand-coloured lithograph on 8vo-size white wove paper with an embossed border of a scallop shell design. An ornate escutcheon design with a central roundel containing an image of a lady in red and blue reading a letter, the envelope in her lap. Flowers (yellow and red striped tulips, blue morning glory flowers, pink roses etc.) spill out of the top of the escutcheon and around the lower edge. A verse is printed at upper and lower centre: 'I FEAR thy kisses. gentle maiden. / Thou needest not fear mine: / My spirit is too deeply laden / Ever to burthen thine. / I fear thy mien. thy tones. thy motion. / Thou needest not fear mine: / Innocent is the heart's devotion / With which I worship thine.'. The interior is blank. The front is adhered to the back at lower right. 'G. KERSHAW LONDON' stamped along the lower edge. Another design from the same series by Kershaw is mounted onto the adjacent leaf of album P.14416-R. See P.14416-R-76. This card is listed along with P.14416-R-76 in a handwritten MS from second-hand bookseller, R.S. Frampton found on the back fly-leaf of album P.14416-R (See P.14416-R-L1), the two bracketed together and priced as 'the 2 for 6/6'.
