Description

A mourning or 'Adieu' valentine. A small 64mo-size card of white lace-paper with corners hand-coloured in turquoise and pink. A central rectangular window is backed with white silk and printed with a letterpress title and verse in blue ink: 'Absent but not Forgotten [in gothic script] / You are absent, yet I often feel / Your presence to my mind as real, / As when your arm around me twined, / And your voice spake in accents kind. / I gaze upon the vacant chair, / And oh! how often you seem there; / The flowers you so fondly loved, / My sorrow many a time hath soothed. / And when before His throne my heart I bare, / Thy name is ever mingl'd with my prayer.'. The card is not fully adhered to the album leaf and can be lifted up to reveal a date written in ink on the verso at upper right: '1854'. This inscription is transcribed in graphite onto the album leaf below the card.
