Description

A small circle of dark blue cellulose lithographed in gold ink and mounted horizontally inside a white, oval-shaped cameo-embossed lace-paper frame featuring scenes of harvesters with sheaves of corn and a bee hive at upper centre. A title and verse are lithographed in gold ink: 'THE / FRIEND I LOVE / The friend I love is / youthful and fair, / And gentle and pure as the / angels are; / Sincerity dwells in her earnest eyes, / And her soul is warm as the / southern skies! / Ah! the friend I love is a / friend indeed. / She's ever true in the / hour of need'. One of a group of lithographed cellulose valentines mounted or found loose in album P.14417-R, some of which are contained in lace-paper sleeves and/or envelopes. Although a maker's name cannot be found, P.14417-R-12 was probably made by J.T. Wood, like most of the other cellulose valentines contained in this album.
