Description

White wove paper with a hand-drawn scalloped border in blue ink. A layer of silver cameo-embossed lace-paper is overlaid on paper springs, although the upper layer is part adhered to the lower, so the springs cannot be lifted. Two circular windows at upper and lower centre contain, respectively, a panel of rice-paper hand-painted with a posy of flowers (pink rose, forget-me-nots, violets) and a small embossed scrap of forget-me-nots. A lozenge-shaped motto printed in pink ink is affixed at upper centre: 'Affections / Offering'. A hand-written inscription in graphite on the album leaf below: 'c.1863'. The date may have been transcribed from the verso of the valentine prior to mounting into the album.
