Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Cameo-embossed gilt, die-cut paper in two layers. At lower centre, a scene of putti holding a canopy above a pair of lovers sitting in a long boat being rowed along by other putti with swans in the foreground. This scene is cut as a top layer and is mounted on paper springs to a lower layer of paper featuring ferns, archways and putti. A circular medallion with gilt lace frame and printed motto is affixed at centre left: 'IN LOVE I HOPE TO CONQUER'. The lower layer of gilt, embossed paper is decorated with fabric pine fronds at centre left and right, an embossed chromolithographed putti carrying flowers at upper centre and a chromolithographed butterfly mounted on a paper spring at upper right. The lower layer is pasted to a white wove back paper and the lower edge of both layers of gilt, embossed paper have been trimmed. A Diamond Mark (1842-1883) is seen at centre left and most likely indicates that the maker is either J.T. Wood or Windsor & Sons. The two firms had a mutual association and the Diamond Mark can be seen on cards manufactured by both.
