Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A small valentine of white wove paper with an embossed design on the front paper. At the centre is a chromolithographed roundel featuring a continental-style scene of a woman sitting in a landscape with a basket of pink roses on her lap, a lake and turreted tower on the right. The lithograph is printed in a limited palette of colours: blue, yellow, green and pink. A paper lozenge with gilt border and motto is affixed at lower centre: 'I will / ever constant / prove.'. P.14417-R-93 is mounted on the same album leaf as two devotional valentines featuring representations of Saints; P.14417-R-94 and P.14417-R-95. Although not a devotional valentine, the style of the image employed in P.14417-R-93 is reminiscent of an early Renaissance painting of the Virgin in a landscape, and which would seem to indicate that the positioning of valentines in the albums was carefully choreographed.
