Description

A highly decorative valentine composed largely of layered white satin leaves (with some losses) arranged on embossed white paper with shaped edges. There are small flower scraps at upper left and lower left and right corners. At the centre is a silver, embossed lace-paper panel to which is affixed a large flower scrap which lifts to reveal a white silk printed with a verse in purple ink: 'Think of Me, Love / The rose needs not the summer light, / the bird needs not the sheltering tree / So much as I in sorrow's / night / Need smiles from thee. …'. The front is adhered to the back. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '3 for 12 /= [12 shillings]'. This either relates to an inscription found inside or on the verso of the card prior to mounting, or is transcribed from a list of valentines bought by Glaisher from a dealer, like that sent to Glaisher by second-hand book dealer, R.S. Frampton (See P.14416-R-L1). P.14417-R-99 is mounted onto the following leaf in the album P.14417-R and is accompanied by the same inscription and therefore similarly identifed as one of three valentines that were bought for 12 shillings.
