Description

White embossed paper with shaped edges decorated with collages of white satin leaves and scraps (blue flower and flaming hearts) at upper and lower centre. A smaller panel of white lace-paper with rounded corners and an oval window is mounted on paper springs at the centre. The oval window contains a silk panel which is printed in purple ink with a verse: 'TO MY LOVE / My love's like the / daffy-down-dilly, / White as the sun, fair / as the lily. / Heigh-ho! how I do / love thee! / I do love thee as the lambs / Are beloved of their dams; / How blest were I if / thou would'st / prove me!'. A second, smaller 'frame' of silver lace-paper is mounted on paper springs around the silk panel. 'MULLORD' is stamped at the centre (visible from the verso). The interior is blank. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '3 for 12 /= [12 shillings]'. This either relates to an inscription found on the verso of the card prior to mounting, or is transcribed from a list of valentines bought by Glaisher from a dealer, like that sent to Glaisher by second-hand book dealer, R.S. Frampton (See P.14416-R-L1). P.14417-R-98 is mounted onto the previous leaf in the album P.14417-R and is accompanied by the same inscription and therefore similarly identifed as one of three valentines that were bought for 12 shillings.
