Description

A 'raised' valentine of white, embossed paper with shaped and scalloped edges mounted with a smaller, silver embossed and lace-paper frame on paper springs, which is decorated with blue, crimped ribbon bows at each corner. Mounted on a paper spring at the centre is a panel of silver, embossed lace-paper backed with white silk embroidered with a verse in red and purple thread: 'TO THE ONE I LOVE / Dearest accept this / offering, / From a heart that's truly thine, / My fond thoughts / are in it spoken / To thee, my only / Valentine'. 'MEEK [?& Co.]' is stamped at lower centre (visible from the verso). Inside at upper right is an inscription in graphite: 'S/V'. A hand-written inscription on the album leaf below: '4/6 [4 shillings and sixpence]'. This either relates to an inscription found on the verso of the card prior to mounting, or is transcribed from a list of valentines bought by Glaisher from a dealer, like that sent to Glaisher by second-hand book dealer, R.S. Frampton (See P.14416-R-L1).
