Description

Loose inside album P.14417-R, between blank leaves, six from the back fly leaf. A miniature rectangle (landscape) of cream card with an embossed border. A lithographed title and verse are printed in black ink at the centre: 'I MEET THEE TO NIGHT LOVE. / [printed in sloping script] Give me the Night love, the beautiful night / When the stars in the heavens are glittering bright / When the flowers are asleep on their pillows of leaves / And no murmur is heard save the sigh the heart heaves / When the valleys [sic] sweet waters reflect the moonlight / Oh! give me the Night love, the beautiful night'. Printed below: 'London G. Casmore'. The verse is by Manchester-born poet, Charles Swain (1801-1874). Remnants of paper adhered to the verso indicate that the valentine was previously pasted into an album or similar.
