Description

A valentine front of white cameo-embossed lace-paper with an overall design of flowers, leaves, fruit and birds, which is set off by a dark red slip paper behind. At the centre is a piece of cameo-embossed lace-paper in green and gold of a design of fluted columns bearing pairs of flaming hearts at left and right with climbing roses containing birds of paradise above. A slip of purple paper behind is mounted at the centre with a collage of cut-paper leaves and a gold tinsel flower. At lower centre, a paper swag with lithographed detail in gold ink bears a motto in red ink: 'Intended as a token of / sincere affection'. 'KERSHAW & SON' is stamped at lower centre. The back paper is missing. An initial 'E' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine. The names 'Edith' and 'Netty' are written into the album. These names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent.
