Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A valentine front of cameo-embossed white and gold lace-paper of a design featuring a church (upper left) and a pair of lovers at Hymen's shrine with putti. There is a slip of dark blue paper behind. Mounted on three paper springs at the centre is a frame of embossed white and silver paper with a central circular window, which is decorated with cut-paper flowers and leaves with gold tinsel centres and a red enamelled flower. A paper scroll with lithographed detail in gold ink bears the verse: 'Oh may thy heart responsive be / To mine in love and constancy'. The frame surrounds a central collaged flower and leaves of red and beige linen with wire and green paper stem and fabric stamens. The back paper is missing. An initial 'E' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine. The names 'Edith' and 'Netty' are written into the album. These names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent.
