Description

A valentine front of white lace-paper with a dark green slip paper behind. The central panel is mounted with a collage of cut-paper, hand-coloured flowers and leaves at lower centre and a lithographed paper musical score at the centre which incorporates a message within the lines of music: 'With Tenderness / but sprightly / Oh! / I should like to marry / if that I could find any little / partner suited to my mind.'. A title is handwritten in blue ink at upper centre: 'Affection's Offering'. 'Dobbs' is stamped very faintly at lower centre. A partial Whatman watermark can be seen at upper centre: 'J W'. The back paper is missing. An initial 'E' is written in graphite on the album leaf below the valentine. The names 'Edith' and 'Netty' are written onto the album leaf between valentines f9ri and f10r. These names would probably account for the single initials of 'E' or 'N' written on the album leaves adjacent to a number of the valentines in the album. The initials presumably indicate either from whom they were received or to whom they were sent.
