Description

Valentine in three layers: A top layer of cameo-embossed white and silver lace-paper with a design of medieval lovers and classical columns with urns and foliage which is mounted with paper springs at upper left and right onto a second layer of white lace-paper. The third layer is a back paper of thin, pink laid paper. The top layer has a central oval window which contains a panel of white silk mounted with a cut-paper, hand-coloured bird with a real feather tail. A collaged garland of hand-coloured cut-paper leaves and flowers is affixed around the central silk panel. On the inside right-hand page is a handwritten verse and signed and dated message in black ink: ' "Beautiful birds! we see you around / When the bird's on the branch the snow's on the ground / ye come when the richest of roses flush out, / And ye come when the yellow leaf eddies about" / Beautiful emblems of friendship are ye, / Which yields a sweet solace as passing joy / flee. / To my uncle J.B. Woolmer / Feb. 14th 1859.'. It is possible that this valentine relates to two addressed to: 'Miss Woolmer / 71 Warwick Square / Pimlico / London'. See P.14580-R and P.14581-R.
