Valentine card
Publisher: Mansell, Joseph
White lace-paper decorated at upper and lower corners with small scraps of pink roses and overlaid with a 'frame' of gilt embossed paper mounted on paper springs and trimmed with woven lace and affixed at lower centre with a small silk roundel framed with a garland of embossed flowers and printed with a verse: 'Tis sweet to love, / for in that joy, / its purity hath no alloy'. The 'frame' surrounds a chromolithograph with embossed gilt detail throughout of a woman dressed in purple seated in profile facing left holding a letter in her hands, a lute propped to her left. The front paper is adhered to the back paper at upper and lower corners. MANSELL is stamped on the white lace-paper at lower centre. Remnants of buff-coloured paper adhered to the verso indicate that this valentine was previously mounted.
