Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
A small valentine of white lace-paper with hand-coloured, embossed paper lily of the valley sprigs mounted at the centre. A hand-written verse in blue ink is written around the lower edge of the central panel: 'Oh no blossom can be on the earth or the tree / Half so dear as the Lily of the Valley to me'. A 'secret' message is written in a different hand (presumably that of the sender) in faint, black ink beneath the lily of the valley leaves: 'The emblem of my best beloved'. DOBBS KIDD & CO is stamped at lower centre. On the inside right-hand page is a handwritten verse in black ink (same hand as that seen beneath leaves on recto): 'Mark the lily fair, but lowly / Listen to the truth it tells / For it bears instruction holy / in its lovely pensile bells. / Meek, it shrinks from observation, / Though with king's, its robes may vie / Not the chief of Judah's nation, / Might such raimant dignify. / Feb. 14th 1859'.
