Valentine card
Publisher: J.L. Marks
A comic valentine on thin, white wove paper folded in half. A hand-coloured woodcut of a woman seen from behind, head turned towards the viewer, holding a nosegay in her left hand, a parasol in her right and wearing a pink shawl with paisley detail. A letterpress verse below: 'How beautiful thou art in dress; / Each maiden fair, in vain distress, / And envious rage doth pitiful smile, / And call thee hag, or fool, the while, / But, oh! hadst thou a grecian nose, / And ne'er a squint in thy dull eye, / Oh then for thee each swain would sigh, / And in thy arms seek love's repose.'. Printed below the image at lower left: 'London: J L MARKS'. The interior is blank. The valentine has been folded several times.
