Valentine card
Publisher: S. Marks & Sons
A comic valentine on a single sheet of thin, white wove paper. An uncoloured woodcut of an old, fat milkmaid carrying a yoke across her shoulders with pails to left and right labelled: 'SHEEPS / BRAINS' and 'SIZE / & CHALK'. A letterpress verse is printed below: 'New milk from the cow -- Ow--Ow-Ow, / In shrilled tone you daily yell, / But many people boldly vow' / It is not only milk you sell, / Bur sheep's brains, size, and nice white chalk! / Which form at least one half your milk, / No, water forms one half that vow! / Then cease to cry milk from the cow!'. Printed below the image at lower left: 'LONDON S, MARKS & SONS'. '56' is printed at lower left corner. From a series of comic valentines relating to lower-class trades. The verso is blank.
