Description

A comic valentine on a single sheet of thin, white wove paper. An uncoloured woodcut of a woman carrying a parasol over her left shoulder and with pursed lips and furrowed brow. A letterpress verse is printed below: 'Forgive me, pale Miss if you think I am rude, / But your mien, and your manners, delare you a prude / With finicking fingers you coil up the lace, / Your caps and your ribbons, with ill-contrived grace, / O! who but a fool would ev'r venture to take, / For a bride such a trumpery ginger bread cake, / Yet whose humble conceits without two pence to spare / Would lead her to think she's a match for a mayor.'. Printed below the image at lower left: 'LONDON S, MARKS & SONS'. '54' is printed at lower left corner. From a series of comic valentines relating to lower-class trades. The verso is blank.
