Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A 4to-size valentine of white lace-paper with a central oval window covered with a net blind. A collage of embossed paper ivy leaves and white silk leaves frames the lower half of the window. A cut-paper and hand-coloured pink rose bud with stem and leaves of green fabric are mounted onto the net blind at the centre. A title handwritten in blue ink on the inside right-hand page displays through the window: 'A / Summer Rose-bud'. When the valentine is opened, a small circular mirror (now cracked) is revealed through which the recipient's face will be reflected. Although unmarked, this valentine is probably by Henry Dobbs as Dobbs, Kidd & Co. Remnants of blue paper adhered to the verso indicate that the valentine was previously mounted.
