Description

A small cutwork valentine on white laid paper, folded in half with a panel of green silk inserted inside double-folded paper at the left side. The paper is cut around the panel in an arch with small circular perforations and scalloped design around the edges. The silk panel is mounted, in landscape format, with delicate cutwork silhouettes in silver and gold paper of a male figure holding a broom and a female figure at a writing desk?. The winged figure of Cupid holding an arrow hovers above them. Trees are affixed to either side (with losses at the far right). The opposite leaf is folded and cut away with a cutwork design of winged hearts. A handwritten verse in brown ink is pasted on a strip of paper beneath and seems to relate to the theme of the cutwork picture: 'ALL distant conversation amongst men, / Depends on the perfection of the Penn / By it we hear if distant Friends be well / By it our own Infirmities we tell / By it our God his just Commandments gave / It doth defend the just, and bind the Knave / By it we may some better Lines Indite / Pray Girl sweep clean and let's sit down to Write'. One of six cutwork valentines of a similar design, all with silk panels, silhouetted cutwork pictures and with cutwork mottoes/emblems.
