Bird and fruit






Netsuke: manju (lid only): Bird and fruit. Circular lid, red lacquer, carved in relief with a mythical bird plucking a piece of fruit from a branch surrounded by flowering foliage on a diaper ground. A band of key pattern encircling underside of the rim; it has a plain metal interior with a metal hinged ring knop.


History note: H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
