Description

Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). A group of three men wearing top hats. The figure (unidentified) wearing boots states (printed speech in a bubble): 'Of course vested / Interests will be / respected'. Lord Sefton (Charles William Molyneux, 3rd Earl of Sefton, 1796-1855), with his back to the fire at far right, says (printed speech in a bubble): 'How! no such thing / as vested Interests in / our days'. The figure at the centre, with his back to the viewer, has been identified as Burdett (Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Baronet, 1770-1844). A fourth figure seated at a table and holding up a newspaper at the far left, in an aside to the viewer (printed speech in a bubble above): 'That is one of S-ft-n's / peculiar hits! agad! I'll / send it as a hint to HB'. The artist's initials in monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'CONVERSATION AT WHITES.'. The publisher's details printed below: 'Published by Thos McLean, 26 Haymarket, Decr 30th 1830.'. Printer's details below the border at lower right: 'Printed by C. Motte, 23, Leicester Sqr.'. Handwritten in graphite at upper right: '101'. See 16397,_Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires_, Vol. XI, 1828-1832, M.D. George, published 1954, pp. 393-4. A number '[101]' printed in square brackets in the right-hand margin on p. 393 relates to the handwritten number at upper right, both referencing the sequence of John Doyle's Political Sketches series.
