Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). The bear (Russia) climbs a pole (Poland) in a bear-pit towards a human head with spikes, the mouth holding a bun marked: 'Liberty'. A figure in military uniform wearing a plumed hat stands beside a man wearing a top hat on the left who incites the bear with a rod marked 'Provocative'. Another figure in military uniform wearing a plumed hat and moustache stands above the pit to the right. The artist's initials in monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'THE GREAT POLAR BEAR / A Graphic Simile.'. The publisher's details printed below: 'Published by Thos McLean, 26, Haymarket, Jany. 12th, 1831.'.
