Description

Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). John Bull sits on a chair at the centre pulling on some trousers. He says: 'The cut may be more according to rule / and the stuff more fashionable, but I begin to / doubt that they will fit more comfortably or wear better / than my old _discarded ever lastings_'. Lord John Russell stands to the right (in the role of tailor) and says: 'Oh! we of the new school, reject such Old fashioned notions / altogether: ...'. Three figures at the far left look on and comment, from left to right: Peel (Robert Peel), Wellington (Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington) and Eldon (John Scott, Earl of Eldon). Signed with initial and monogram at lower left: 'A & HB'; The initial 'A' precedes HB's monogram to indicate additional authorship of the design. See George, introduction, xlviii. Title printed below the border: JOHN BULL trying on his "bra" new " _GREY_ "BREEKS.". The publisher's details printed below: 'London: Published by Thos McLean, 26, Haymarket, March 16th, 1831.'.
