Description

Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). Lord Wharcliffe, wearing frock coat and top hat, imitates the dancing pose of Brougham beside him, who wears a dress pinned with roses in the character of Columbine. King William IV, dressed as a fairy with trousers underneath his skirt, stands at the centre, wearing his crown and holding a sceptre in his right hand and a wooden sword in his left. The masked Harlequin figure at centre right is Grey. Behind and to the right are Wetherell, dressed as a clown, and Eldon as Pantaloon. Signed with monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'GRAND CHRISTMAS PANTOMINE. / Now performing by His Majesty's Servants with new tricks, Dresses, Decorations, &c.&c.&c.'. The publisher's details printed below: 'Published by Thos. McLean, 26, Haymarket, Jany. 17th 1832.'. A small, circular blind stamp at lower left: THOs. MCLEAN. Printer's details below the border at lower right: 'Printed by A. Ducôté Succr. to C. Motte, St Martins L.'. Printed above the border at upper right: 'HB Sketches No 175.'.
