Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). Brougham sits beside a stream in the role of Maria from Laurence Sterne's, _A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy_ (1768). Maria's dog has been exchanged for a lamb labelled 'IRISH /COERCIAN / BILL', which he holds on a tight leash. Signed with monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'A STUDY / for / STERNE'S MARIA.'. Below the title: 'Note. Here the Painter has by a poetical licence changed Maria's little dog into a lamb, as more emblematical of innocence - / thereby following the example recently set him in a certain place, where - it is said - a Noble Lion underwent a similar metamorphosis'. The publisher's details printed below the border to the left: 'Published by Thos. McLean, 26, Haymarket, April 11th. 1833.'. A small, circular blind stamp at lower left: 'THOs. MCLEAN'. Printer's details below the border to the right: 'A. Ducôté's Lithogy. 70 St Martins Lane.'. Printed above the border at upper right: 'HB Sketches 254'.
