Printmaker:
Doyle, John (HB)
Publisher:
McLean, Thomas
Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). A coal-heaver (Lord Durham) stands in profile on the left, leaning against his shovel and facing Lord Brougham, who is dressed as a broom girl (holding small brooms behind his back). John Bull, his hands in his pockets, stands between them, directing a smile at Lord Durham. Signed with artist's monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'IN SILENCE ELOQUENT.'. The publisher's details printed below the border to the left: 'Published by Thos. McLean, 26, Haymarket, Novr. 3rd.1834.'. An eye-shaped blind stamp at lower left: 'SUBSCRIBER'S / COPY'. 'HB' is usually seen at the centre of this stamp, but the embossing is weak and so it is not visible. Printer's details below the border to the right: 'Ducôté & Stephen's Lithogy 70, St. Martins Lane.'. Printed above the border at upper right: 'HB Sketches No 344'.
