Hide & Seek HB Sketches No. 345
Printmaker:
Doyle, John (HB)
Publisher:
McLean, Thomas
Lithograph (uncoloured) on white wove paper. Inlaid within a frame of buff wove paper (approx. height 360mm x width 515mm). An over-sized copy of _The Edinburgh Review_ is being read by Lord Brougham, who sits on the ground, dipping a pen into a pot labelled 'GALL'. Another man, Lord Durham, stands on a bundle of _The Times_ and peeps over the top of _The Edinburgh Review_ to watch Brougham, saying: "A! Ah! I see you - / at your old tricks again". Signed with artist's monogram at lower left: 'HB'. Title printed below the border: 'HIDE & SEEK.'. The publisher's details printed below the border to the left: 'Published by Thos. McLean, 26, Haymarket, Novr. 6th.1834.'. An eye-shaped blind stamp at lower left: 'SUBSCRIBER'S / COPY'. 'HB' is usually seen at the centre of this stamp, but the embossing is weak and so it is not visible. Printer's details below the border to the right: 'Ducôté & Stephen Lithog. 70, St. Martin's Lane.'. Printed above the border at upper right: 'HB Sketches No. 345.'. P.14773-R is another impression.
