Portrait of Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton
Printmaker: Norfolk, Jane Strange
Etching and drypoint on india paper. Proof before letters. Small oval. Head and shoulders portrait of Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, in profile facing left, wearing a buckled queue wig and the robes of the Chancellor of Cambridge University. The sheet of india paper is laid down on a larger sheet of wove paper with a double-edged rectangular frame drawn around it in graphite. An inscription in pen and ink on the india paper sheet below the platemark: 'The Duke of Grafton etched by / Miss Norfolk from a drawing / made of him in the Senate House / at his Installation.'. The same hand is seen on an envelope accompanying another impression of this print in the collection of the British Museum: 1855,1208.307. It is possible that the author of the hand is printseller, William Smith (1808-1876). Amateur etcher, Jane Strange Norfolk (1743-1824), daughter of William Norfolk of Cambridge, drew and then later etched the head of the Duke of Grafton during his installation as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge in 1768. Strange Norfolk married Francis Smythies (1742-1798), son of Rev Palmer Smythies, on 26th February 1771 in All Saints Church, Cambridge.
