Etching and drypoint on laid paper. Head-and-shoulders portrait of a late-middle-aged man wearing a powdered wig, clerical bands and academic gown, facing right with head three-quarters turned to face the viewer. Within a rectangular border. Engraved onto the plate at lower right: 'I[J] Bretherton'. The title engraved below in a combination of closed letters and sloping script: 'CHARLES MASON, D.D. / Fellow of Trinity College, / & Woodwardian Professor, in the University of Cambridge, / ----- / Died 18.th Dec.r MDCCLXX. Aged LXXII'.
