Description

Loosely woven linen embroidered with polychrome silks (faded) in cross and satin stitch.
28.25cm x 34cm
11 1/2" x 13 3/8"

Sawtooth framing border and horizontal band dividing the sampler into two. The upper area contains a framed inscription flanked by two flower pot motifs with random small motifs above.
The inscription: "samuel dowling Father/dearpaid For This which/I Wrought here. When F/riends are gone And mon/ey is spent Then learning/is Most Excellent.Hann/ah dowling wrought Th/is in The 11 Year of her Ag/1769 Sarah"

The popular inscription can be found on samplers from the 17th century onwards.

Hannah was christened on the 26th Jan. 1758 at St. Margarets, Lowestift, Suffolk, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Dowling.

The larger portion of the sampler is dominated by a large, brick built 3 storey mansion, surrounded by bird and animal motifs with a repeat pattern band to either side.

Several elements of the sampler contents are similar to ssampler groups associated with Norfolk, the neighbouring county to Suffolk e.g the saw tooth or zigzag borders, the stepped lozenge band in the upper panel.
