Description

Woollen tammy embroidered with polychrome silks (faded) in cross stitch. On a cotton backing.
32cm x 43.25cm
12 1/2"x17"

A meandering strawberry flower, fruit and leaf border with a narrow band dividing the sampler into two panels.
The upper panel contains a cartoche enclosing "Ellen Nevill/Aged 10 Years/1836" flanked by flower pot motifs with a further inscription beneath the cartouche.
"Tis religion thatcan give/Sweetest pleasures while we live/Tis religion must supply/Solid comfort when we die"

The verse was written by Mrs. Mary Masters (d.1759?), a poet of humble origins, and can be found in her " Familiar letters and Poems upon Several Occasions" London 1755. It is also found in "A Discourse on the vast importance of true Religion" by M.Swinney, 1789.

The lower, larger panel contains a central flowering tree with floral sprigs, flower baskets and pot, small trees arranged symetrically to either side.
