Description

Wool, embroidered with polychrome silks (very faded0 in cross stitch.
36cm x 47.5cm
14 1/4" x 18 3/4"

Inscribed "Martha Lowe 1830", lower centre, worked within a garland of buds.
Above this the Inscription:
I wish-but stop what should I wish/Not to be powerful nor be rich/
Beauty like flowers will soon decay/Pleasures like time will steal away/A mind secure in innocence/A conscience void of all offence/ A gracious heart and free from care/Shall be my wish shall be my prayer"
Densely embroidered floral and tree detached motifs ( similar to Berlin Woolwork patterns) surround the inscriptions, all enclosed by a floral border.
