Description

Linen, embroidered with polychrome wools in cross stitch.
33.5cm x 40cm
13 3/8" x 16 3/4"

Strawberry border enclosing a central depiction of "The Temptation of Adam & Eve" above which are placed the Two Spies of Canaan worked on a smaller scale. The remainder of the sampler is worked withtraditional flora & fauna motifs with the inscription beneath Adam & Eve " Great blessing ever wait on virtuous deeds/And tho a late a sure reward succeeds/ Elizabeth Houltby."
The inscription is taken from the "Mourning Bride" by William Congreve (1670-1729) and was included in many compilations.
