Narrow repeat froming border . Upper section symmetrically worked traditional motifs flanking a central flower poy above a narrow repeat band.
Beneath is a cartouche with an inscription: "Sweet is sleep to tired nature,/Sweet to labour is repose,/ Sweet is life to every creature,/ Sweet the balm that hope bestows./ But through spring, and evening's breezes,/Sweet, and hope, and life, to me/ All are pleasant, nothing pleases,/ Jesus! like a smile from thee!
These are the final lines of "Spring" by the Rev. Dr. William Bego Collyer (1782-1854) a distiguished Non-Conformist , Congregationalist, minister. In the 19th ccentury such hymns were added as a supplement to those of Dr. Isaac Watts.
A strawberry repeat band separates the verse from the depiction of a house and garden with tree, dogs, perching birds and a bird and butterfly detached motifs..
At the bottom is the inscription: " Emma Hambly Aged eight Years July 30th 1842"
