Colour Saturation: Vessel in White, Black and Red
Glassmaker: Reid, Colin
Kiln-cast glass dish, twice fired, battuto cut and polished.
Large almost-flat circular dish. The upper side a wide horzontal polished rim around a concave matt centre. The underside convex. Thin stripes of colour - red and black fading through to white - cut vertically through the otherise clear glass, such that from most directions the dish appears fully coloured.
Given by Nicholas and Judith Goodison through the Art Fund. Purchased by the donors from Adrian Sassoon.
Diameter: 47 cm
Height: 7.9 cm
Method of acquisition: Given (2018-11-19) by Goodison, Nicholas and Judith
Battuto (meaning struck or beaten) is a cold working finishing treatment used by Venetian glassmakers in which a grinding wheel is employed to mark the surface of the glass. This dish is different from Reid’s earlier work. Here, he uses strips of optical glass tinted with pigment; the piece is kiln-cast, polished and ‘battuto’ cut underneath, with an indentation on top.
