Ivory kneeling figure
Carver: Unknown
A kneeling European figure with a billowing cape, possibly a Dutch. His arm raised in a position that suggests he once acted as the mount to another object. Underneath his knees are pierced with holes for attachment. The portrayal of foreigners as supports for treasured vessels has a long history in China and became popular once again after the trade with the west. The ivory was carved and coloured with black and red to highlight details.
