Egrets Fishing Among Blossoms
Draughtsman: Canton workshop
This is a Chinese export watercolour depicting two white egrets in a waterside setting. The birds have pale, cream-colored plumage and long, grey beaks. One bird is shown with its wings partially spread, appearing to have caught a small fish, while the other stands upright in shallow water. The scene is set at a water side, with a sandy shoreline and plants. There are yellow flowers with green standing tall on the right side and smaller blue flowers in the lower left. The background softly transitions between muted blues, greens, and sandy hues. The painting is executed in the style typical of Chinese export art from around the late 18th or early 19th century, combining traditional Chinese brushwork with Western watercolour. Previously described as “storks catching fish with two different sorts of flowers”.
