Description

Slip-coated earthenware with incised decoration spotted with green and brown under yellow lead-glaze: a horse in a medallion surrounded by borders of fish and stylized foliage

Brown earthenware, the interior and upper part of the exterior coated with cream slip, incised and cut away, and spotted with copper-green and manganese-brown under yellow lead-glaze; the lower part of the exterior and foot are undecorated. Circular with a sloping rim, and curved sides, standing on a footring. Decorated in the centre with a circular medallion containing a dark yellow horse against a dark brown background with three groups of three yellow spots on it. The medallion is surrounded by a band incised with seven fish swimming to the left separated by green and brown spots, with an incised band above them. On the rim there is a continuous wavy stem of stylized foliage over a scale or pebble background between two incised bands. On the underside of the rim between pairs of incised bands, there are sixteen birds (eagles?) separated by crossed lines representing plants.
