Bordered sampler
Maker: Jones, Alice
Linen, worked with polychrome silks and woollen threads in cross stitch, the whole enclosed by a border of strawberries. An inscription at the top, 'Wonastow Lodge Monmouthshire Wales', is set above a depiction of the Regency style lodge of Wonastow Court, a 16th century house rebuilt in 1803.
A verse and the name of the maker, Alice Jones, are inscribed within a floral border at the bottom of the sampler.
The building and the inscriptions are surrounded by mainly symmetrically placed traditional motifs e.g. birds, flower baskets, trees etc.
