Lacquer box, ko-bako (box for the incense ceremony). Box, lacquer, with silver fittings. Quatrefoil incense-container of rounded rectangular form with indented corners and overhanging lid (A) with two cusped sides; the two sides of the lid are cut away to expose two silver fittings on the lower section in the shape of two maple leaves pierced with slender cord rings. Attached to each ring is a red and white chequered woven silk ribbon. The exterior is decorated with gold maple leaves and a lovers' knot tied to a branch on a black ground with nashiji (shimmering spangles). The interior has a dense nashiji ground.
