History note: Made for a female member of the family of Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn, either his wife Hawise Lestrange or his daughter Margaret (d. 1336), wife of Sir Fulk FitzWarin of Whittington, Salop; Marchioness of Downshire; Sotheby’s, London, 9 May 1933, lot 1; bought by Viscount Lee of Fareham (d. 1947), June 1935; presented to the Fitzwilliam Museum by his widow, 1954.
