"Over the Top"
The Great War: Britain's Efforts and Ideals

Printmaker: Kennington, Eric Henri
Publisher: Ministry of Information
Draughtsman: Kennington, Eric Henri (After)

A soldier is seen at close-quarters from behind, climbing a ladder from the trench to go 'over the top'. Another soldier, helmeted head pressed downwards and face unseen, is seen doing the same further along the trench. In a narrow margin along the upper edge of the image, other soldiers are sketchily represented moving with heads down and bayonets out in front. A figure holding his arms up at upper left may have been shot down, but this is far from clear.

History note: From the printed Annual Report, 1919: 'A collection of sixty-six large lithographic prints by Muirhead Bone, Eric Kennington, George Clausen, R.A., Frank Brangwyn, A.R.A., C.R.W. Nevinson, William Rothenstein, Charles Pears, Claude Shepperson, A.S. Hartrick, and other artists, illustrating The Great War: Britain's Efforts and Ideals, have been received from the Ministry of Information, under whose auspices these splendid lithographs were made.'
