(After)
After a portrait by Sir Francis Grant, R.A. (1803-1878) (?c.1856; ?Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire) which shows John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland (1778-1857) seated at a desk in the estate office of the Rutland seat of Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire. A copy of the 'Leicestershire Herald' and a document inscribed, 'Belvoir Castle / Feb 5, 1856 / Rutland' are seen on the floor beside the sitter's chair. These objects possibly relate to his role as Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, a post which he held between 1799 and his death in 1857. The estate 'Game Book' is propped against the desk on the floor to the right.
