Description

After the painting by Rembrandt (1647; Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Ident.Nr. 828E). Susanna, partially draped, walks down marble steps into a large, outdoor bathing pool. She addresses the spectator. Buildings and trees are seen in the background. An old man, one of the elders, is pulling off her drapery on the right. Another elder enters behind to the right. Susanna's robes and slippers are seen on a wall to the right.

Notes

History note: VanSittart gave 1,485 engravings to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1879 and this mezzotint was probably included within this group. The number written in pen and ink on the verso presumably relates to Vansittart's own cataloguing system and that written in graphite to some kind of count by curators at the time of the acquisition.
