After the painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds (1776, exh. R.A. 1777, no. 288; Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, Bowhill, D150; Mannings, 1581 [as 'Lady Caroline Scott', painted as a pendant to the portrait of her brother, Charles Scott, Earl of Dalkeith (1772-1819), Mannings, 1582]). Lady Caroline Montagu (1774-1854) was the third daughter of Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleugh and Elizabeth, daughter of George, Duke of Montagu. Also known as Lady Caroline Montagu-Scott before marriage and as Lady Caroline Douglas following her marriage in 1803 to Charles Douglas, 6th Marquess of Queensbury. As a child, standing in a wintry, parkland landscape, snow on the branches of the trees, full-length facing the spectator, wearing a hat, cloak and muff against the cold. A terrier dog at her feet to the left and a bird to the right.

Note

Mezzotint. Scratched letter proof with publication details trimmed away ['Publishs'd [sic] Novr. 1st 1777 by John Boydell Engraver in Cheapside London']. Chaloner Smith/Frankau suggest that the plate had been slightly reworked. Uncleaned inscription space with scratched open roman letters at lower left: 'S.R Jos Reynolds Pinxit' and lower right: 'I. R. Smith Sculp.t'. See BM 1902,1011.5010 for published state after title. Smith's plate was also known as "Winter" (the title is documented by D'Oench, 109 and Mannings, 1581).
