Description

After the portrait by Robert Edge Pine of the printseller, Elizabeth Bull. Half-length to waist, head turned towards the right. She wears a shawl around her shoulders and a low-cut, embroidered dress. An earring in her right (visible) ear.

Notes

History note: An inscribed number on the old mount, '324' may relate to either the sale lot number or a curatorial count of mezzotints in the collection. One of 36 prints purchased by the Director at a cost of £2 (see Syndicate minutes, 6 Feb 1885, item 7). Other works included: two prints by Georg Pencz, P.4591-R and P.4602-R. Also mezzotints, P.10425-R, Richard Houston after Reynold's portrait of Elizabeth Percy, Duchess of Northumberland and P.15103-R, James Watson after Robert Edge Pine's portrait of the printseller, Elizabeth Bull.

Note

Mezzotint. Trimmed to the platemark. Undescribed state between II and III. A curatorial annotation (John Charrington) in Goodwin suggests that this is an undescribed fifth state, but in fact relates to the plate before it was cut down in state III (See Chaloner Smith and Goodwin), featuring a different publication line to that given in state III and prior to the erasure of the 'Publish'd according to Act of Parliament' engraved below the image in state II. Inscription space engraved in italics at upper centre: 'Published according to Act of Parliament'. The artists' names engraved below: 'R.E. Pine Pinx.t' and 'James Watson Fecit.'. The Publication line engraved in roman letters: 'London, Printed for Carington Bowles, next the Chapter House in St. Pauls Church Yard, & Rob.t Sayer, near Serjeants Inn, Fleet Street'. Engraved at lower right: ' Price 5.?s'
